Teen pregnancies reach lowest point since 1940

Encouraging news from the CDC as the teen birth rate hits a record low after years of decline.

The birth rate for American teens fell to 29.4 births per 1,000 in 2012 — a six percent drop from 2011, alone. Data shows it fell for all ethnic groups. (Via WEWS)

To put that into perspective, the report finds it’s the lowest rate in 73 years. That’s how long the government has been keeping track of teen births. (Via WBTV)

A lot of the progress has been made in the last few years. The birth rate in 2007 was 41.5 births per 1,000 teenage girls — falling almost 30 percent in the last five years. (Via NBC)

Data shows the teen birth rate has been cut in half since 1991, something doctors consider an encouraging trend. (Via WRTV)

A spokesman for the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy told USA Today the number is a sign of more kids simply being safe.

“It really is this magic formula of less sex and more contraception that has driven the rates down … More kids are delaying sex … and the kids who are having sex are using contraception more consistently and carefully.”

This comes at the same time the overall birth rate has hit a bit of a plateau. The Daily Mail reports it has fallen in the last year for women in their 20s, but has gone up slightly for women in their 30s and 40s.

The Wall Street Journal explains the birth rate starting to make a slow turnaround is a sign the economy is doing the same thing. The birth rate plummeted as the economy plunged in 2007 and 2008.

While the trend in teen births is going in the right direction, a spokeswoman with the American Academy of Pediatrics says, with more than 300,000 teen births last year, there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Officers responded to the scene around 2 a.m. Thursday after receiving a report of a woman screaming. They arrived to find the victims in the mysterious condition, none of them breathing. Authorities believe the three are residents of the area. According to the owner of the market, the woman was barefoot, and the 8-year-old girl was crying when they purchased three cans of Ajax cleaner and latex gloves.

There were no signs of obvious trauma on the trio’s bodies, and police are not sure what happened to them or what injuries they may have suffered. Both the woman and the girl are in critical condition. A hazardous-material team identified the white powder covering the victims as a baby product.

“It is devastating when you’re dealing with children,” LAPD

Capt. Michael Rimkunas said.

While an unidentified man was seen in handcuffs during a preliminary investigation, he was later released. Police will review surveillance video from the scene and are currently looking for witnesses who may have information on what happened.

Edgewater High School football coach and Art Recovery teacher Chris Leak, who played quarterback at the University of Florida just before Tim Tebow, voluntarily surrendered his Florida Educator’s Certificate amid allegations that, around Sept. 5, 2016, he received a massage from a 15-year-old female student and asked the student to touch his penis, according to an order filed by the Florida Education Practices Commission on Tuesday.

Leak allegedly was wearing only a towel when he received the massage.

As a condition of the voluntary surrender of his certificate, Leak will never have the certificate reinstated and will not be allowed to apply for a new one. He also chooses “not to contest any of the allegations or charges” levied against him in the Administrative Complaint, according to documents.

“My client voluntarily talked with the police and denied the allegations,” said Leak’s lawyer, Tim Jansen. “No charges were filed and the investigation was closed last year. He has no plans to teach in the future. He maintains his innocence.”

WSB-TV received dashcam video of the suspect running from a car. Her pants eventually fall down, and then, so does she.

A Norcross, Georgia, police officer pulled over a Toyota Camry this week after running its plates and discovering its owner was wanted on several charges.

Police said driver Dayana Maldonado then took off.

The chase was on until Maldonado pulled into a bus maintenance yard at the end of a dead end street and tried to run. Her pants dropped and she fell to the ground -- not once, but twice.

That allowed for officers to catch up and take her into custody.

“Can you pull up my pants please, sir,” Maldonado said in the video. “This is so embarrassing.”

Police said Maldonado was wanted on several felony probation violations, including burglary. She now faces several additional charges as well.

Maldonado remains in jail as of Friday afternoon, held without bond.

If you collect Precious Moments figurines, you may be sitting on a small fortune. Some of the company’s earliest offerings can sell for hundreds of dollars online.

Precious Moments was founded in 1978 and originally featured 21 collectibles. “God Loveth a Cheerful Giver,” one of the so-called Original 21, retailed for $15 at the time. Today, it’s worth a lot more than that.

According to a report from Today.com, the “God Loveth a Cheerful Giver” figurines have been valued at more than $2,000, although they usually go for less than half that amount. One sold on eBay for $250 in October 2017.

“God Loveth a Cheerful Giver” features a little girl giving away puppies. Kansas City Star reported that was discontinued in 1981.

The most valuable ones are in excellent condition; even the smallest cracks or chips can dramatically reduce their value, according to Woolvey Fine Antiques & Collectibles.

While “God Loveth a Cheerful Giver” is by far the most valuable Precious Moments figurine, others have also fetched more than their original price. According to Today.com, certain limited edition collectibles and ones “from the peak of the Precious Moments craze” in the late 1970s and early 1980s can sell for more than $100 on eBay.
