HAMILTON — “Major work” on Hamilton’s Columbia Bridge is now complete, ahead of a projected Nov. 14 date, according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.
“That was the best drive to work I have had in months,” Hamilton Mayor Pat Moeller told this news outlet today.
The bridge connects Pershing Avenue on the east side of the Great Miami River with New London Road on the western shoreline. Closures on the bridge started in early March.
Cross-town traffic has been a growing concern during heavy-traffic hours, and officials have been working to improve traffic flow.
But the orange barrels are not gone for good. Nighttime work will cause closures on east and westbound lanes from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Nov. 13 through Nov. 17.
Traffic will be maintained during the work, according to the ODOT.
More lane closures could come in the spring for the placement of permanent markings, according to ODOT.
Brandon Collett, the bridge engineer for ODOT District 8, recently told Hamilton City Council that this phase of work “should be a lot less harmful to the traffic than it is now.”

MIDDLETOWN — UPDATE @1:15 P.M.:
There was no threat at Fenwick High School this morning, Middletown police have determined.
A former student entered the Ohio 122 school building to visit former teachers and was walking through the school at some point by himself, said Middletown Maj. David Birk.
“Some people who were unfamiliar with the former student became suspicious, but there was not threat at all,” Birk said.
A Middletown high school is on lockdown this morning.
A notice from Bishop Fenwick High School this morning states: “Bishop Fenwick High School is currently on a ‘soft lockdown.’ This means that teaching continues in the building, but no one will be permitted in or out of the building until the lockdown is lifted. Everyone is safe in the building.”
Middletown Maj. David Birk said a student was acting suspiciously and the school called police. As a precaution the school was placed on lockdown. Birk said officers are on scene investigating and talking with those involved.
