The contract is the result of five months of negotiations and "the threat of a strike … was narrowly avoided," according to the release.

The agreement impacts about 50 bus drivers and monitors, according to First Student. It was approved by 70 percent of the workers, according to the Teamsters.

Local 957 President Kenneth Howard said in a prepared statement that "the bargaining unit really came together at the final hour in solidarity to ratify an agreement that is fair to everyone.”

“We’re looking forward to a productive relationship with the company at this yard over the next few years,” Howard's statement reads.

The workers got increases in wages and personal days as well as improvements in the grievance process, according to the Teamsters. In addition, a committee will meet quarterly in an effort to "establish positive relations between labor and management," according to the release.

Negotiations stalled in September and the Teamsters issued a 21-day notice to First Student. The two parties didn't return to the table until the third week of October.
