Springfield firefighter fired for ‘racially insensitive remark’

SPRINGFIELD — A Springfield firefighter was fired after the department said they became aware of “a racially insensitive remark that was shared on a social media platform,” according to the department’s fire chief.

Firefighter Bradley Baugh was terminated from the Springfield Fire/Rescue Division following the alleged post, according to Springfield Fire Chief Brian Miller.

Miller said a supervisor of Baugh’s became aware of the social media post and alerted the chief, who terminated Baugh on his next shift due to the seriousness of the post.

“Your reputation starts day one on this job,” said Miller.  “(It) makes the stakes a little higher.”

Miller said Baugh was hired Dec. 6, 2017 and had been out on duty following training for about three weeks.

The fire chief said the department has a social media policy for its staff that has been in place for around six to seven years.
