DAYTON — UPDATE @ 2:50 p.m.
A woman is now in stable condition after she was shot by a man who attempted to force her into his SUV, according to Dayton police.
The victim was walking in the area of North Main and West Helena streets around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday when an SUV pulled up next to her, Dayton police Major Brian Johns said during a media availability. When the woman refused to enter the vehicle, the man pulled out a gun and shot her at least one time.
The victim was only verbally ordered to get in the vehicle, and a gun was not displayed during the demand, Johns said.
After the shooting, the victim walked a short distance to a convenience store for help, but the store was closed. She sat in front of the store until a customer of the store found her around 6 a.m. and transported her to Grandview Hospital.
The woman is now listed in stable condition, Johns said.
Police do not believe the woman and the suspect have any connections to each other.
“We have our entire homicide unit investigating this right now,” Johns said. “We just can’t stand for this.”
Johns described the suspect as an older, light skinned black male, with a Afro-style haircut. The vehicle he drove away in was described as an older-model maroon SUV.
Police are reviewing nearby businesses that might have captured the shooting on surveillance video.
