Vandalia standoff: Police find man in apartment, shot in apparent suicide

VANDALIA — A man in his 20s, who was holed up in an apartment on Heather Court, was found dead from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, according to police.

  • Shortly before 6:30 p.m. law enforcement tactical response team members found the man dead inside the apartment.
  • Apartments along West Alkaline Springs, near Heather Court, were evacuated because of the apparent standoff.

Vandalia police Lt. Kurt Althouse said members of a police tactical response team entered the apartment just before 6:30 p.m. and found the man, deceased.

The discovery occurred after the team made several attempts to communicate with the man, including using a bullhorn.

Althouse said police were called to the apartment in the 800 block of Heather Court about 12:30 p.m. to check on the welfare of a man whose relatives expressed worry about him. Those family members said they spoke by phone with the man, who seemed to be in a stressful situation.

The tactical team was dispatched when the first officers on scene, with the assistance of another resident of the apartment, tried to get inside and heard what they believed was a gunshot, Althouse said.

Earlier that day, apartments along West Alkaline Springs, in the area of Heather Court, were evacuated because of the apparent standoff focused on an apartment on Heather Court.

Witnesses who contacted this newsroom said police officers have evacuated residences and have their service weapons drawn.
