Darke County standoff west of New Madison ends peacefully

DARKE COUNTY — UPDATE @ 12:48 p.m. (Oct. 16):

A standoff involving Darke County deputies and a man the sheriff said is active in the military ended peacefully this afternoon and the suspect was taken to the hospital.

Darke County Sheriff Toby Spencer said deputies were called to the Rush Road address after the man involved in the standoff was threatening family members and himself around 10 p.m. Sunday

Spencer said the sheriff’s office took all precautions due to the man being active in the military.

The suspect did fire one shot in the house, however never targeted any law enforcement, Spencer said.

The man, who has not been identified, surrendered peacefully shortly after noon and was taken to a local hospital for observation.

INITIAL REPORT:

Police activity continues on Rush Road in Darke County, where deputies are said to have been since the early morning hours Monday.

The police activity was reported around 4:45 a.m. in the 1200 block of Rush Road.

Witnesses told this news outlet there were multiple deputies on the scene.

When this news organization spoke to the Darke County Sheriff’s Office they would only say deputies remained on the scene around 11:20 a.m and said any supervisors on duty that could release information also were on scene.
