OVI checkpoint planned for Friday in Butler County

The Butler County OVI Task Force will conduct a sobriety checkpoint in Fairfield Friday night.

The OVI checkpoint will be conducted on northbound Ohio 4 near Symmes Road from 11 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday. 

Officers, deputies, and state troopers will also conduct saturation patrols in the area.

Santa Claus visits babies in local NICU

Santa Claus paid a visit to the NICU of the Miami Valley Hospital tonight to spend time with its infants.

The early holiday visit started at 6 p.m. at the Berry Women's Center Building. 

The NICU "elf" was there to take photos with Santa and the babies. MVH has approximately 30 to 40 infants in its NICU. 

According to the hospital, Santa's visit has been a positive experience for families over the years as they celebrate their babies first Christmas.

House fire on Wellington Drive in Dayton causes extensive damage

FROM SCENE: House fire on Wellington in Dayton

UPDATE @ 6:16 p.m.: The house fire on Wellington Drive caused extensive damage, a Dayton fire battalion chief said. 

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen, at the back of the home, the battalion chief said. 

A woman and two children who are the residents were not home when the fire broke out. There are no reported injuries. 

South Smithville Road remains shut down until further notice.

OTHER LOCAL NEWS: Fire causes major damage to house in Beavercreek 

UPDATE @ 5:51 p.m.: South Smithville Road at Linden Avenue is shut down in both directions because of the house fire on Wellington Drive.

Crews are on the scene of a structure fire, in the 3000 block of Wellington Drive, where people are possibly trapped. 

Dayton fire crews are searching the two-story building right now, we're hearing.

  • No incidents have been reported.

Surface Street Incidents

  • Smithville Road is closed in both directions at Linden Avenue in Dayton, as of 5:50 p.m., after crews are called to a house fire on Wellington Drive.
  • SB U.S. 68 at Deer Run Road south of Urbana, roadway is partially blocked as of 4:30 p.m. after vehicle struck a guardrail, overturned. Driver’s injury is minor.
  • On Upper Bellbrook Road at Feedwire Road in Bellbrook, traffic lights are down causing traffic to be backed up. 
  • On Springboro Pike and E. Dorothy Lane Road in Moraine, crash reported around 7:20 a.m. The northbound lane of Springboro Pike was shut down.

  • Farmersville-West Carrollton Road close to Upper River Road just west of the Great Miami River, closed this week for railroad work. Expected to be closed for three to four days. Detour route signs will be posted at the site. 
  • Stewart Street Ramp to US 35 East, RAMP CLOSURE March 28 - Sept 30, 2018. The official detour is: Stewart Street to Edwin C. Moses Boulevard to I-75 north to US 35 west to James H. McGee Blvd. to US 35 east.
  • I-75 north Ramp to US 35 west and east, Lane width restriction Nov. 29 - Apr. 1, 2018. One lane will remain open on the ramp with a width of 11 feet.

DARKE COUNTY 

  • SR 121 between SR 726 and New Madison-Coletown Road, ROAD CLOSURE Nov. 20 - Dec. 22. The official detour is: SR 722 to US 127 to SR 503

MIAMI COUNTY

  • SR 571 between Fourth Street and Fifth Street in Tipp City, ROAD CLOSURE Jan. 2 - 9. The official detour is I-75 to US 40 to SR 202

SHELBY COUNTY  

  • SR 29 between Cisco Road and West Russell Road, Daily lane closures Nov. 27 - Jan. 1 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. One lane will be open for travel in each direction through the use of flaggers.
