Aggravated murder, murder and tampering with evidence charges were approved today for Gabriel Schaaf, who is accused of killing his son Jonathan Schaaf last December, according to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.

A father in jail accused of killing his son in December told detectives he used a hatchet to kill him during an altercation, according to court records.
According to a search warrant affidavit, deputies returned to the home of Gabriel Schaaf, 58, on Thursday for a follow-up interview in the killing of Jonathan Schaaf.
Deputies had considered Gabriel Schaaf the prime suspect, according to the affidavit.
DNA results revealed investigators found DNA from Gabriel Schaaf under the fingernails of Jonathan Schaaf, according to the court documents.
Gabriel Schaaf also said that Jonathan Schaaf was holding a Mauser rifle when he was killed, according to the document.

A Preble County father has been arrested and charged in in connection to the death of his son in December 2016.
Deputies said 58-year-old Gabriel Schaaf was interviewed and arrested Thursday. He is accused of killing his son, Jonathan Schaaf, according to the Preble County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators said on Dec. 27, 2016, Gabriel Schaaf called 911 and said he found his son Jonathan Schaaf dead inside their home in the 3900 block of Sonora Road.
The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office determined Jonathan Schaaf’s cause of death to be multiple sharp and blunt force injuries, deputies said.
“Over the course of nearly six months, investigators have continued their investigation and processed numerous pieces of evidence through the Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab in Dayton,” Preble County Sheriff Mike Simpson said.
Gabriel Schaaf remains booked without bond in the Preble County Jail on suspicion of murder.

Preble County deputies have arrested a man on the same road where his son was killed in December, according to jail records.
Gabriel Schaaf was arrested in the 3900 block of Sonora Road Thursday evening, the same location of the December homicide, and is booked on a preliminary charge of murder, jail records indicate.
On Dec. 27, Jonathan Schaaf was found dead by his father, who identified himself as Gabriel Schaaf in a 911 call, in their home in the 3900 block of Sonora Road and his death had been ruled a homicide.
According to a search warrant affidavit, deputies had responded to the Schaaf residence “approximately two to three times in reference to domestic violence calls between Mr. Gabriel R. Schaaf and Jonathan Schaaf.”
Deputies said the two men are known to get highly intoxicated and have made threats of killing one another, the affidavit read.
The cause and manner of Jonathan Schaaf’s death were not immediately released.
