Miami County overdoses up in 2017

TROY — Miami County ended 2017 with 31 confirmed overdose deaths and two suspected deaths, pending rulings, according to county Coroner William Ginn's annual report.

The overdose deaths are up from 2016, when the county recorded 20 overdose deaths. Miami County saw a record of 25 overdose deaths in the first six months of 2017 before a decline the second half of the year.

The overdose deaths were broken down as follows:

  • One caused by fentanyl alone
  • One by unknown drug/substance
  • Remainder of overdoses were by multiple drugs. Those drugs included marijuana, benzodiazepines, cocaine, heroin, fentanyl, carfentanil, other fentanyls, alcohol, amphetamines, gabapentin and others.

In January,  the county recorded 102 overdoses. Like the overdose deaths, overdose numbers declined the last six months of the year.

A year-end report from Miami County Public Health showed 778 drug overdoses in 2017. Of the overdoses, 65 percent involved people ages 25-49.

The area of overdoses are as follows:

  • 275 were in Troy
  • 310 in Piqua
  • 93 in Tipp City
  • 52 in West Milton
  • 25 in Covington.
