Firefighters free man trapped under large tree in Champaign County

A 66-year-old man was rushed to the hospital after a large tree he was cutting down fell on top of him in Champaign County north of Mechanicsburg.

The victim was trapped under the estimated 50-foot tree for approximately 30 minutes before firefighters arrived and freed him, said Jeromy Cantrell of the Mechanicsburg Fire Department.

Cantrell said the man was conscious at the scene, but he was complaining of numbness in his right leg.

Authorities checked whether CareFlight or MedFlight could respond, but the medical helicopters were grounded because of the weather.

EMS transported the man by squad to Dublin Methodist Hospital for treatment.

Crews in Mechanicsburg are responding to the report of a tree falling on a man in the 1900 block of South Parkview Road.

It happened around 10 a.m. at a property north of Mechanicsburg in Champaign County.

The victim had to be extricated from the fallen tree, according to the Champaign County emergency dispatch center.

Emergency personnel checked with CareFlight and MedFlight, but neither medical helicopter service could fly today because of inclement weather.

Crews remained on scene with the patient approximately an hour after the first call for service.
