VIDEO: Urbana woman on vacation witnesses scene outside Florida HS

A Miami Valley woman on vacation in Florida witnessed the aftermath of today’s deadly high school shooting.

“I have never in my life seen so many cop cars and paramedics and SWAT team things everywhere. It was unbelievable,” said Urbana resident Stacey Longstreath of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School campus in Parkland, Florida.

Longstreath said she first heard about the shooting when she and her husband stopped for a pizza lunch. She saw numerous police cruisers speed by and then her sister called to tell her what was happening and how close she was. Longstreath said she read about it using the WHIO app on her mobile phone.

As she and her husband were passing by the school on the interstate this afternoon on their way from Fort Lauderdale to an area beach, Longstreath shot a video using her cellphone, which she provided to WHIO.

Longstreath — a grandmother of school-aged children

— lives near West Liberty, where there was a shooting in January 2017 that injured a student. Today’s events called that to mind.

“It just makes you kind of scared because you know, it’s a school, and you feel the same way whether it’s in my town or someone else’s town. ... you send your kid, like I said, to go get an education, and they’re supposed to be safe there and these kinds of things are happening, you don’t even want to send your kids to school,” she said.

But Longstreath said a shooting is something that can happen any time, any where.

“You can’t be afraid or you’ll never leave your house.”
