Hunter Brown, 19, who played for the Waynesville High School Spartans, was sentenced Wednesday to 30 days in the Warren County Jail. He also must write apology letters to the victim and the team, plus perform 100 hours of community service, according to orders from Judge Timothy Tepe.

Brown will be on probation for three years and won’t be allowed on school property during that time.

The victim was 14 years old in 2016. The alleged bullying incidents happened in Waynesville and at an Indiana football camp, according to police reports.

Brown last month pleaded guilty to retaliation. Prosecutors and defense lawyers agreed to the charge after Brown initially was indicted on charges of gross sexual imposition, child endangering, menacing by stalking and unlawful restraint in April.

“The indictment blew things so out of proportion,” Brown’s lawyer Martin Hubbell said before the hearing.

The charge on which Brown was convicted relates to his actions after the alleged bullying was reported.

Brown was suspended from the team, expelled from school and graduated from an online school, according to statements in court. He will be allowed to go to work while serving the jail sentence.

“In looking at possible resolutions, that charge accomplished what all involved parties were seeking as a resolution,” Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell said.
