2 indicted in rash of robberies; one a former Thurgood basketball star

A former Thurgood Marshall basketball star and another man were indicted Thursday in connection to a series of armed robberies in September 2016 that ended with a police pursuit and crash.

Derrick Daniels Jr., 18, is charged with six counts of aggravated robbery, each with a three-year gun specification, in addition to failure to comply with a police order, according to a Montgomery County grand jury report.

Antwan Crisp, 24, is charged with two counts of aggravated robbery, which also both have a three-year gun specification. He also faces two counts of having weapons under disability following a prior violent offense, according to the report.

Three Dayton stores were robbed within 20 minutes the morning of Sept. 1, including Dollar Tree, 2198 N. Gettysburg Ave.; Quick Stop, 4575 Little Richmond Road; and Dollar General, 2312 N. Main St. Police spotted the suspects’ car but the pursuit led to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of West Nottingham Road and Philadelphia Drive.

Derrick Daniels was arrested at the scene. Antwan Crisp was taken into custody the next day.

Daniels verbally committed to play at Miami University in 2015. After the 6-foot-8 athlete was later ruled academically ineligible, he missed his entire senior 2015-16 season.

Daniels and Crisp remain in the Montgomery County Jail and are scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
