1 hurt in Dayton house fire when residents overload fireplace

DAYTON — One person was taken to a hospital from a house fire in the 100 block of South Findlay Street in Dayton, where residents were trying to use the fireplace to heat their home.

Fire crews were dispatched to the address about 9:40 p.m. on a report of a structure fire.

Dayton fire Capt. Bob Barnes said a male resident suffered burns to his arms when he grabbed a chair that caught fire and threw it out of the residence.

The chair was too close to the fireplace, where the residents had been using firewood that was too large for their fireplace.

Barnes said the fireplaces in older homes are not designed for the size wood the residents were using.

They also were using a generator for electricity because their home doesn’t have electric service. It’s supposed to be hooked up next week, Barnes said they told him.

The generator was halfway in the house, he said, and fire officials ordered it shut it down because of the toxic fumes generators produce. Barnes said they should never be used inside a home.

He said the residents will have to vacate their home for tonight because of the fire damage, smoke and fumes.

Barnes estimated the damage at $500.

Temperatures in Dayton and the region were expected to drop into the 30s Monday night, according to Storm Center 7.
