Humane Society won’t house dogs for Clark County anymore

The Humane Society Serving Clark County has sent a letter to county commissioners informing them that the organization won’t be able house dogs picked up by the dog warden after Aug. 31.

The Humane Society isn't closing, board member Michael DeCourcy said, but the agency needs to make preparations in case it does.

“The board is doing everything it can like we have always done to stay open,” he said. “We put a contingency plan in place in case, God forbid, we do close.”

Clark County contracts with the Humane Society to house the dogs picked up by the dog warden.

The Clark County Commission and the Humane Society found themselves in tough negotiations earlier this year that resulted in the Humane Society getting thousands of dollars less than what it used to get annually.

The shelter has reduced its hours and is now only opens on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Volunteers and staff members want to keep the animal shelter open, DeCourcy said, but money is getting tight.

“We have always been a month-to-month organization,” DeCourcy said. “We have always tried to continue to operate. We don’t get as many donations as we did in the past. What we are doing is seeking out public support to continue to take care of dogs in Clark County.”
