Fundraiser seeks to raise awareness of domestic violence

DAYTON — Many recognize October as breast cancer awareness month, but few may realize its distinction as domestic violence awareness month.

Statistics show one in every four women are impacted by domestic violence, that’s double the one in eight who are diagnosed with breast cancer.

Danielle Orick is using the month to honor her mother, Elvina McDaniel, who was shot and killed by her husband 16 years ago, by hosting a benefit concert in her honor.

“I know that if I can help somebody, just one person, than that’s one person who doesn’t have to go through the things that I went through,” Orick said.

All of the proceeds from the concert benefit the Artemis Center, a local non-profit dedicated to providing support and services to those facing domestic violence.

“The problem is most people don’t, they don’t really know what to look for, what to be aware of for domestic violence, it’s pretty rampant, it’s worse than I ever thought,” Larry Deckard said.

The Artemis Center operates a 24-hour hotline for victims here in Montgomery County. Those looking to find out more about the center’s services can find out more by calling 937-222-7233.
