Driver ID’ed in fatal crash with tractor in Shelby County

The person killed in this crash is identified as Melanie Smith, 36, of Sidney, according to Shelby County Sheriff's Office. She was in the Malibu driving north on Ohio 219 that struck the open cab of a farm tractor, according to a media release. 

Two children, ages 3 and 6, in the backseat were checked out an an area hospital.

The farm tractor driver was Leon Hemmert, 62, of Botkins. He was also checked out an area hospital.

EARLIER REPORT

The driver of a car with two children inside was killed tonight in crash involving a tractor.

The crash was reported around 7 p.m. on state Route 219 just off County Road 25A, north of Botkins.

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said the two children in the car were not injured.

The farmer’s condition was not available, the sheriff’s office said.
