Man accused in fatal Troy fight makes initial court appearance

TROY — UPDATE @ 9:50 a.m. (Dec. 11): 

A Trotwood man, accused in the death of Willard Higgins, made an initial appearance in a Miami County courtroom Monday.

William C. Smith, 36, entered a not guilty plea during the hearing and his bond was set at $500,000.

UPDATE @ 8:10 p.m. (Dec. 9):

A suspect in the death of a Troy man following a Friday afternoon fight is facing a murder charge.

William C. Smith, 36, of Trotwood, was detained late Friday in Fayette County.

Troy police detectives Saturday night brought him back to Troy, where he will be booked into the Miami County Jail on suspicion of murder in the death of Willard Higgins Jr., 36, of Troy.

Higgins suffered serious head injuries during a fight in the 600 block of South Walnut Street in Troy. He was taken to Kettering Medical Center, where he died around 5 p.m., police said.

News Center 7’s Steve Baker asked Smith what the deadly fight was over, but Smith remained silent.

The man who died as a result of a fight in Troy on Friday afternoon has been identified by police as Willard Junior Higgins, 36, of Troy.

INITIAL REPORT

One man has died and another is in custody after a fight occurred in Troy on Friday, according to officials.

The incident occurred in the 600 block of South Walnut Street involving a fight between two men.

One individual was transported to Kettering Medical Center where he later died as a result of head injuries. His name or any other information is not being released at this time.
