Dayton Public Schools will resume in-person learning as part of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s plan that gave teachers and other school staff members priority access to the COVID-19 vaccine.

The only stipulation was that schools had to go back to in-person learning by March 1.

“That’s a huge relief to me. Knowing that at least the teachers are not going to be bringing it into the schools,” said Felicia Barr, parent of DPS student.

In DeWine’s weekly briefings, he pointed out that children are suffering from not only academic consequences but social and mental health consequences as well.

DeWine said, “We will have a problem we still have graduation and I think we want the signal to be today, yeah you can start planning.”

While Barr said she’s happy her child and others can go back to school, she says, “There’s still a risk for children and families, but it definitely lowers the risk. So, we are getting towards safer. We are moving in the right direction for that.”

In a statement, Dayton Public Schools said parents can still opt to have their children learn remotely. However, the fully-remote option will not include the student’s DPS teacher, instead, students will use a self-paced learning software.
