The shooting deaths of John and Alma Smelko appears to be the result of a murder-suicide.

Alma Smelko, 83, of West Carrollton, died as a result of multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and her death has been ruled a homicide, according to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office.

John Smelko, 83, of West Carrollton, died of a gunshot wound to the torso and his death has been ruled a suicide, the coroner’s office said.

Police said there are no suspects in the case and the added the public does not have any reason to be concerned following the shooting.

INITIAL REPORT (Dec. 31, 2017):

Two people were found dead in a home on Enxing Avenue in West Carrollton Sunday night and police are saying there is no immediate cause for concern for residents in the area, according to David Wessling, Deputy Chief of the West Carrollton Police Department. 

John and Alma Smelko, of West Carrollton, were removed from the scene by the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office and autopsies are scheduled for the two victims Tuesday, the coroner’s office said. 

Wessling said the department is not searching for any suspects in the case, however stopped short of saying what led to the deaths of the 83-year-old victims. 

Officers responded to the 300 block of Enxing Avenue around 10 p.m. after dispatchers received a call from a relative of the victims saying he discovered them unresponsive, according to dispatch reports. 

According to initial reports, the person who reported the incident said they found a handgun on the scene. 

“He has located a handgun on the floor,” dispatchers told officers responding to the scene.

Wessling could not confirm whether a gun was recovered on the scene, however said he would hopefully be able to release more information on Tuesday after speaking with detectives investigating the case.
