Multiple crews knock down large barn fire on SR 49 in Darke County

GREENVILLE — UPDATE @ 5:30 p.m.

The barn fire on state Route 49 has been knocked down and the scene has since cleared.

The cause of the fire is still to be determined as further investigation is needed, but Captain Subler of the Greenville Fire Department says its nothing suspicious.

The barn is a total loss.

“It was a wonderful workshop he had created,” Captain Subler said.

The homeowner was alerted by a granddaughter that the barn, containing classic cars among other things, was on fire.

Firefighters on scene were able to save the siding on the house and a few cars.

Versailles, Union City and Ansonia, as well as units from Gettysburg, New Madison and Liberty Township responded to the 7000 block of state Route 49 and assisted in knocking down the fire.

Surrounding fire departments reported being able to see the fire from their stations before arriving on scene Sunday afternoon.

State Route 49 is currently shut down near the areas of Children’s Home Bradford Road and Magnolia Drive.

Heavy smoke and flames are covering the top of the structure.

We will update this story once the fire is under control and we learn more about what caused the fire as well as how much damage has been done.
