Ohio leaders, Congress members react to Virginia shooting

Senator Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said he and his wife, Connie Schultz, are praying for those injured in the shooting. "I want to thank the Capitol Police who put their lives on the line – not only today but every day to protect not just members of Congress, but also our staff and visitors from Ohio and all over the country," according to Brown's prepared remarks for a noon conference call about a bill he's introducing to stop price spikes by pharmaceutical companies. "It's a reminder that there are things far more important than party politics and we must work together," Brown said.

"Marcia and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve and the other victims of this morning's shooting in Virginia. We are praying that everyone makes a full recovery from their injuries. From the early reports, the quick actions of the U.S. Capitol Police and Alexandria Police at the scene kept this situation from being much, much worse. As a Member of Congress, I'm thankful for the men and women of the Capitol Police that protect Representatives, Senators, staff, and the public every single day."

Rep. Warren Davidson, R-Troy, thanked others on Facebook for asking about his safety and asked for prayers for all involved.

Rep. Mike Turner, R-Dayton, issued an emailed statement thanking law enforcement.

“As details of this shooting continue to unfold, my thoughts and prayers are with Rep. Scalise, the Capitol Police Officers wounded and those affected by this criminal attack,” Turner said. “I would like to thank the Capitol Police and local law enforcement for their swift response."

Congressman Jim Jordan, R-Urbana, said in an interview with Fox News hes "praying for all involved" following a shooting at the Republican practice for the Congressional Baseball Game in Alexandria, VA that resulted in multiple people shot, including House Majority Whip Steve Scalise.

Speaking with Fox News and airing on AM 1290 and News 95.7 FM WHIO, Jordan said he did not have specific details on the incident and was working to find out more.

“I’m getting the same information [the media is]”, he said.

Jordan said he was unsure if it was unusual for Congressional members to be practicing at a baseball field at 6 a.m. but called the annual Congressional Baseball Game “a tradition.”

Jordan also said he has not played in the game since his first year in Congress.

Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, and Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio tweeted Wednesday morning they're sending thoughts and prayers to the victims.

News reports indicate Rep. Brad Wenstrup, R-Cincinnati, helped with medical aid at the scene. Wenstrup is a doctor and represents a district along the Ohio River in Cincinnati.
