40 cars crash up on I-74 near Ohio-Indiana border

Updated: Tuesday, January 12, 2016 @ 5:21 PM

At least 40 vehicles were involved in a pile-up crash on Interstate 74 near the Ohio-Indiana line Tuesday.

According to our partners WCPO, the pileup was a combination of two crashes that started with 28 vehicles and ended with 40 involved.

Heavy snow was reported in the area at the time of the crash and state police said these kind of pileups are not uncommon in these type of conditions.

“When these chain reaction type crashes happen, that’s often what causes them,” said Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles. “People lose visibility and then they start slowing down.”

Officers told WCPO there were some serious injuries in the crash that shutdown I-74 in both directions.

The crash was first reported around 11 a.m. and the highway remained closed into the afternoon.

Drivers involved in the situation were bussed to nearby Shelton Fireworks, WCPO reported.

No injuries from fire in 10th-floor apartment of Dayton high-rise

More details on fire at Dayton high-rise

UPDATE @ 8:50 p.m.: Dayton Fire District Chief David Wright said crews were called for a possible situation on the 11th floor of the apartment building in the 900 block of Wilmington Avenue, but found fire in an apartment on the 10th floor.

They quickly knocked down the fire and found no victims, he said.

Investigators are on scene, working to determine the cause of the fire.

Wright said no evacuation was needed because crews were able to usher the smoke down a hall and out a window. Plus, he said, residents kept the doors to their apartments closed and that helped prevent the smoke from spreading throughout the building.

He could not put a dollar amount on damage because he hasn't been to the 10th floor to see the damage.

UPDATE @ 8:04 p.m.:

At least two or three dozen residents are now in the lobby of a Wilmington Avenue high-rise apartment building where Dayton crews were sent to put out a fire on the 10th floor.

OTHER LOCAL NEWS: Wind chill advisory remains in effect for region

We're hearing the 11-story building is a residence for the mentally and physically disabled as well as the elderly.

One woman has been brought out on a gurney. Her condition is not known, but she was sitting up as firefighters took her to a medic unit. She said she was experiencing chest pains as she was taking the stairs in the evacuation, a Dayton fire battalion chief said.

The woman has been taken to a hospital.

Search for man in Riverside criminal case spreads to Xenia

UPDATE @ 11:20 p.m.: Police are continuing their search for Charles Dameron, 33, who eluded police earlier tonight when a Greene County Sheriff’s deputy tried to stop him on U.S. 35 East.

He is considered armed and dangerous, officials said.

There is an active felony warrant for Dameron’s arrest and he’s also wanted for questioning in a shooting in Riverside early Friday morning.

Charles Dameron

Deputies last saw him driving east on U.S. 35 toward Xenia. There was also information Dameron had a small child -- not his own -- in the back seat of the vehicle when he fled.

At 7 p.m., Xenia police officers located the vehicle North Richard Drive in Xenia. The vehicle was running and the child was found inside, unharmed.

The child has been returned to the parents.

Authorities have released no other details about the child or the shooting.

Dameron was seen hiding behind a shed on Berwald Drive and ran from officers.

Xenia police, county deputies, a Beavercreek K-9 officer and troopers from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (including its Air Unit) searched the area, but were not able to locate Dameron.

He was last seen wearing dark blue jeans, a dark colored jacket with a fur lined hood.

If you see Dameron, please contact the Xenia Police Division at 937-372-9901.

FIRST REPORT

The search for a man Riverside police believe is involved in a criminal case there spread to Xenia tonight and triggered a manhunt in this Greene County city involving several law enforcement agencies.

Residents in the area of Bingham and Richard drives have been told to shelter in place until further notice, according to a Xenia police dispatcher.

We're also hearing that the Ohio State Highway Patrol has been using a helicopter as part of the manhunt.

We're working to confirm information about the manhunt, but we're hearing that the Greene County Sheriff's Office and Xenia police also are assisting Riverside police.

We’ve learned there has been a debriefing at Xenia police headquarters, but that information would not be released tonight.
