Students were initially scheduled to start school Thursday, but they will now begin August 24.

“We’re pushing the school year back, but I think everyone would agree that it’s for a very good reason,” said Public Relations Specialist, Ryan Gilding.

Fairborn City Schools moved their start date from August 17 to September 8 to allow families more time to choose between in-person and online learning.

Dayton City Schools also made the move from August 17 to September 8 while they transition to online learning for the first nine weeks of classes.

“Coming to school in a typical year has inherent risks, same is true during a pandemic,” Gilding said. “We’re taking every precaution to have a safe learning environment.”

Teachers returned to the classroom for more training and preparation Thursday, including how to deal with situations regarding masks, classroom spacing, social distancing and proper cleaning.

“Our staff, our personnel needed a little more time to train,” Gilding said. “A little more time to prepare.”

Gilding said the district understands the changes for families have not been easy.

“The families understand the situation we’re in. We’re going to work with them to make this transition as easy as possible, but they want to come into a place where our staff is ready,” Gilding said.
