ArriveSafe, a program started by Montgomery County Prosecuting Attorney Mat Heck, Jr., will offer free cab rides home up to $50 for Montgomery County residents this Thanksgiving weekend.

Those who plan to use ArriveSafe should simply call 937-449-9999 and request a free ride home.

The program, with support from AAA Miami Valley and Heidelberg Distributing Company, has provided nearly 6,000 free cab rides since its start in December 2007.

“The life you save may be your own” is ArriveSafe’s motto, and ten years later it still aims to promote responsible choices when it comes to having a sober designated driver.

This year, Montgomery County has had over 235 alcohol-related traffic crashes, which resulted in injury and 10 fatalities. There were 12,243 OVI related crashes in Ohio last year, where 346 people lost their lives. During the 5-day Thanksgiving holiday period alone last year, there were 3,663 crashes resulting in 1,213 injuries and 9 deaths with alcohol being a factor in nearly half of the fatal crashes.

“Each and every day, there is simply no excuse for drinking and driving. This Thanksgiving holiday weekend, we’ll pay for a cab. You decide - do you want to go home in the back of a cab, or handcuffed in the back of a cruiser? Plan ahead and get home safely.”, said Prosecutor Heck.

ArriveSafe will offer the free cab rides home from 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 22 until 6 a.m. on Sunday, November 26, 2017.
