Historic Shelby Co. arrest warrant from 1800’s found on eBay

The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office recently received an arrest warrant dating back to the 1800's.

The old warrant dates back to March 1843.

Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart said he has an extensive collection of items like this. He calls the original warrant the “crown jewel” of his collection, which is on display at the sheriff’s office.

“I’m impressed in a couple of ways, it’s a unique, historic document, I’m surprised it hasn’t been lost in the sands of time,” Lenhart said.

The hand-written warrant came from Putnam County to Shelby County for the arrest of John F. Hathaway for a charge of "chicanery" which means trickery.

A local retired police officer found the warrant on eBay and gave it to the sheriff.
