Gas leak shuts down part of Wayne Ave.

UPDATE @ 9:35 a.m.

Work to prepare for the demolition of the former Hughes Plumbing Supply building, 210 Wayne Ave., led to a gas leak and evacuation of nearby buildings Monday morning.

The contractor told officials they cut a gas line by a meter as they had been advised the gas feed was shut off.

The gas feed was still active and the building filled with natural gas, officials said.

Buildings to the north of the location were evacuated. Officials decided to put a shelter-in-place order at a nearby preschool because the wind was blowing the other direction.

No one was injured. Wayne Avenue was expected to reopen before 10 a.m.
