2-year-old hit by car in same area where girl 11, was fatally struck

DAYTON — UPDATE @ 8:05 p.m.

A 2-year-old boy ran into the street Sunday afternoon while he and his babysitter were headed to a barbecue fundraiser for an 11-year-old girl fatally struck by a car, the babysitter said.

The babysitter is not being named because she is a juvenile.

Shawn Parker, one of the organizers for the benefit held at Dayton Automotive Service, 1947 N. Main St., said he is a relative of Makyla White and said he also knows the 2-year-old boy hit today.

“(The boy) was 2, Kyla was 11. How can a 2-year-old survive getting hit by a car and then an 11-year-old be hit by a car” who was killed? “Speeding was a factor in Kyla’s death. … She died because that man was speeding, that’s why she didn’t survive,” he said.

Parker said the woman driver today tried to stop to avoid hitting the 2-year-old boy, and that she had been obeying the speed limit, which he credits for saving the child’s life when he ran into the street.

Speeding is a general problem in the area. Parker said he’s even been holding signs saying “Slow down for Kyla” but that drivers still speed past him.

“They need to put another light right here. Another light, save a life,” Parker said.

The fundraiser held today is to cover funeral and burial costs for Makyla, and he said they are close to reaching the goal, though he declined to say the specific cost.

“A little kid just ran out in the road and he got hit by a car,” a caller told a 911 dispatcher.

The caller said the driver of a red Saturn stopped and was still on scene after striking the young boy. The accident happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Main Street in Dayton.

“He’s 2 … he’s awake, he’s alert,” the caller said, adding the child was bleeding from his nose following the accident.

FIRST REPORT

A 2-year-old child was hit by a car this afternoon in the same block where an 11-year-old girl was fatally struck earlier this month.

The 2-year-old was struck around 3:30 p.m. in the 2000 block of North Main Street in Dayton. The young child was awake and breathing and was taken to Dayton Children’s Hospital, according to the Montgomery County Regional Dispatch Center. The child’s name, gender and condition were not available.

Makyla White was hit by a car and dragged several feet Oct. 12 while trying to cross the 2000 block of North Main Street. She died of her injuries Oct. 14 at Miami Valley Hospital.

Police have said the section of North Main Street where the accident occurred has been identified as a problem because of the high incidents of speeding as well as jaywalking. Police also have said crosswalks are often ignored.
