Union City fire officials accused of theft continue on suspension

The Village of Union City fire chief, assistant fire chief and a captain were all put on unpaid administrative leave in August after they were accused of stealing from the village, officials said.

The investigation into Fire Chief Pamela Idle, Assistant Fire Chief Brian Stump and Capt. Craig Idle — husband of the suspended fire chief — involves the theft of money over a long period of time, said Village Police Chief Mark Ater.

Ater is overseeing the day-to-day operation of the fire department while the leadership is in suspension. He is a certified firefighter and paramedic.

It’s unclear how much money the three are accused of stealing.

Chief Deputy Mark Whittaker, Darke County Sheriff’s Office, said sheriff’s detectives are reviewing evidence of possible theft and tampering with evidence.

He said the investigation is continuing and no further details can be provided.
