Suspect says drugs are fake: ‘It looks like ice but it’s fleece’

DAYTON — When police found a baggy of suspected drugs Saturday evening, the suspect insisted they were fake.

“It looks like ice but it’s fleece,” the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Pete Craft, told officers, according to a Dayton police report. Fleece is a term used for substances portrayed as drugs and sold to people who expect to buy drugs.

Police at 6 p.m. were at a vacant property at 333 Linden Ave. for an unrelated reason when they saw two men who tried to walk away from them.

The second man, Craft, told police he thought he had warrants for his arrest, which he did, the report stated.

When an officer handcuffed and searched Craft, they found a plastic bag with a white powdery substance in his front jacket pocket. Craft said it was powdered sugar for his brother who has diabetes.

A second officer searched Craft before placing him in the back of his cruiser. He found another plastic bag, this one with a clear, crystal-like substance. Craft said it was rock salt but not drugs, the report stated.

Craft was taken to the Montgomery County Jail for several misdemeanor warrants and also on suspicion of felony drug possession, online jail records show. He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
