Police: OVI driver in jail who hits pedestrian, flees

UPDATE @ 6:30 a.m.:

A driver accused of hitting a pedestrian early this morning and then driving off was identified as 27-year-old Joseph R. Johnson of Piqua, according to Covington police.

Johnson was booked at 5:19 a.m. into the Miami County Jail on suspicion of aggravated vehicular assault, OVI and hit/skip crash, online jail records show. According to police, Johnson was found in Piqua.

The incident was reported just after 2:30 a.m. on Chestnut Street near the intersection with Ullery Drive. The victim, 28-year-old Ashley Via, was listed in fair condition later Saturday at Miami Valley Hospital.

UPDATE @ 4:45 a.m.:

Covington police say they have a man in custody whom they believe fled the scene of a pedestrian strike this morning.

Officers say the man is being taken to Upper Valley Medical Center before being booked into jail. It is unknown whether he’s being transported for treatment of injuries, or for a blood test requested by police for possible intoxication.

Police also have not released the condition of the woman, and have not identified any factors in the crash.

UPDATE @ 3:45 a.m.:

Police say a woman in her late 20s was hit by a vehicle near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Ullery Drive in Covington early Saturday morning.

The victim was flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital, but her condition was not available.

The vehicle fled the scene of the crash and police are continuing to search for the driver

FIRST REPORT

Police and medics in Covington have responded to a reported pedestrian strike near the intersection of Chestnut Street and Ullery Drive this morning.

CareFlight has also been requested to the scene of the crash, first reported around 2:35 a.m.

Reports indicate a vehicle fled the crash and deputies from the Miami County Sheriff’s Office along with Covington police are searching the area.
