Man assaults deputy during traffic stop, flees after pursuit

UPDATE 12:02 p.m.

The suspect reached speeds of 105 to 110 miles per hour during the pursuit on West Third Street, according to a report from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The pursuit started after the suspect was pulled over when a deputy noticed it “had extremely dark window tint that prevented any visibility into the vehicle,” the report says.

The deputy smelled a “slight odor of burnt marijuana coming from the vehicle,” so a K9 was asked to come to the scene.

Additionally, the deputy ran the suspect’s background, and discovered he had an “extensive drug history and had been the target of multiple police search warrants,” the report says.

Once the K9 arrived, the suspect became nervous when he was asked to step out of the vehicle for the search. The suspect then fled the scene after refusing to comply and being tased.

The deputy in pursuit of the vehicle reached speeds of approximately 95 miles per hour, the report says.

The deputy eventually lost track of the suspect. Dayton police later located the vehicle crashed into a fence in the backyard of a house in the 200 block of Mercer Avenue. About 20 feet from the crash, a semi automatic gun was found on the ground.

A fresh set of “vehicle burn out tracks” from the alley onto Conover heading south on Conover also were discovered.

UPDATE @ 6:45 a.m.

The deputy who was struck by the fleeing vehicle was treated and released from Miami Valley Hospital with minor injuries, according to a release from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The ID of the suspect has not been released.

Just before midnight Wednesday, deputies were conducting saturation patrols when they stopped a vehicle for an equipment violation, the release says. During the stop, the driver was asked to step out of the vehicle for a K9 free air search.

The driver refused and started to drive away. The driver struck the deputy with his car and fled east on West Third Street.

Two deputies pursued the vehicle for felonious assault on a police officer to the area of Paul Lawrence Dunbar Avenue and Conover Street, where the vehicle crashed into a fence. The suspect fled on foot and escaped.

The incident remains under investigation.
