Lawyer questions interview in Warren County active shooter case

LEBANON — The 19-year-old held since June in an active shooter case in Warren County was questioned after he told investigators he no longer wanted to talk with them, according to his lawyer.

Mohammed Laghaoui’s lawyer makes this claim in motions filed in Laghaoui’s case, seeking a delay so that he can decide whether he should file a motion to suppress Laghaoui’s statements to police.

“The interview shows that law enforcement continue to question Defendant after stating he did not want to answer questions,” said Nadeem Quraishi, the lawyer hired last month to represent Laghaoui.

Laghaoui is accused of wounding his father and a sheriff’s deputy and firing into two apartments during a shooting spree that prompted an overnight lockdown of the Landen area and manhunt for him.

Investigators continue to search for the assault weapon Laghaoui allegedly used, but found ammunition and a manual for an AR-15, as well as a passport with which Laghaoui planned to leave Ohio.

Last week, Gilb found Laghaoui competent to stand trial, contrary to a forensic psychologist's opinion, based on interviews of Laghaoui, his family and other examination.

The case was expected to head back into the courtroom later in October for a hearing on the second stage of Laghaoui’s not guilty by reason of insanity plea.

He remains in the county jail on $2 million bond.
