A 24-year-old Illinois man caught with 3,200 grams of crystal methamphetamine was sentenced today to 11 years in prison.

Rene Nevarez-Reyes, of Palatine, Ill., pleaded no contest today to aggravated possession of drugs, with major drug offender specifications. He was immediately sentenced to a mandatory 11-year sentence because of the drug specification, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office.

Nevarez-Reyes was stopped Oct. 26, 2014, by a Montgomery County Sheriff’s deputy on southbound Interstate 75 at Ohio 725 in Miami Twp. His arrrest followed a tip to law enforcement that a large amount of crystal meth was on its way to the Dayton area from Chicago, officials said at the time of Nevarez-Reyes’ arrest by the Miami Valley Bulk Cash Smuggling Task Force.

The crystal meth, worth approximately $250,000, was found in a compartment constructed in the gas tank of his 1999 red Ford Ranger pickup truck, prosecutors said.

“Illegal drugs being brought into our community continues to be a problem. Seizing some 7 pounds of crystal meth makes our community safer,” Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. stated in a release. “We will continue to hold these offenders responsible and seek the longest prison term possible.”
