A 42-year-old Tennessee man has been arrested on a rape charge in connection to the sexual assault of a developmentally disabled woman in July 2000 in Warren County.

The indictment of Brian L. Sundin was announced Thursday after he was discovered through his arrest in Williamson County, Tennessee.

Sundin was charged in a sealed indictment on Feb. 27 because he had not been arrested.

It was unsealed after he was arrested for theft in the Tennessee county and authorities there discovered the warrant for his arrest in Warren County.

In July 2000, a nurse at Brookside Extended Care Center in Mason found blood in the diaper of a “severely developmentally disabled adult female,” according to a press release issued by the Warren County Prosecutor’s Office.

“It’s sickening to think that there are people out there capable of doing something like that to someone who suffered so much in everyday life,” Prosecutor David Fornshell said in a press release.

Sundin is alleged to have entered the facility through an unlocked door.

The disabled woman died in 2011.

Sixteen years later, test results matched with Sundin’s DNA profile registered with the Florida Department of Corrections, investigators said.

“Obviously, this case is still in the very early stages. But I’m so grateful that advances in technology have given us the ability to bring to justice offenders who would commit these types of heinous crimes,” Fornshell added.

Sundin is to be extradited to Warren County to stand trial on the charge.
