$5M bond set in Mercer Co. child homicide case

CELINA — UPDATE @ 4:05 p.m. (Oct. 26):

Bond was set at $5 million for a 39-year-old man facing charges in the death of 4-year-old Jaxxon Baker.

Cory Eischen appeared this afternoon in Mercer County Common Pleas Court, where a pretrial hearing was set for Nov. 28.

UPDATE @ 12:35 p.m. (Oct. 25):

Cory Eischen has been indicted on aggravated murder, two counts of murder, involuntary manslaughter, two counts of endangering children, domestic violence and two counts of felonious assault, according to court documents.

Eischen is accused in the homicide of Jaxxon Baker, 4, who died from multiple trauma to his body in September.

UPDATE@1:40 p.m. (Sept. 29):

Mercer County Sheriff’s deputies responded on Aug. 5 to the same home where a 4-year-old boy was found dead with multiple trauma to his body earlier this week.

Deputies went to residence to check on the welfare of Jaxxon Baker, according to a sheriff’s office report.

According to the same report, deputies received information that Cory Eischen, the same suspect arrested in Sunday’s homicide investigation, forced Jaxxon to try and eat food he had spit up, hog-tied Jaxxon with socks and swaying him in the air and that he got a carpet burn on his cheek from that. Eischen also tossed Jaxxon toward a table, the report said.

Deputies investigated and contacted Children’s Services. Investigators found Jaxxon had several marks on his face, but they didn’t appear to be fresh marks. Eischen told deputies he did not restrain the child with socks, but that sometimes he and the kids play cops and robbers with handcuffs.

No charges were filed in this case, which has closed, the report said.

UPDATE @ 4:53 p.m.:

Mercer County Prosecutor Matthew Fox said no official charges have been filed in this case.

Cory Eischen is being held on a probation violation for a 2014 felony domestic violence case. His bond is set at $500,000 bond.

Another 911 call in this incident came from the suspect’s father, who had been called by his son to come to the home. The man was administering CPR, but the child was not breathing and cold to the touch, according to court documents.

A search warrant was executed overnight Sunday at the home on Rauh Road that Eischen shared with the child’s mother.

Items seized from the home included socks, a shirt, a towel, a rag, a bath mat, eight different belts from the bedrooms and kitchen, a pair of children’s pants, and a sample of a red/brown spot on the bathroom floor, according to a return of search warrant filed in Celina Municipal Court.

UPDATE @ 10:02 a.m.:

Mercer County deputies are investigating after a 4-year-old child died Sunday at Mercer Health in Coldwater after suffering external injuries to the majority of his body, including his face and torso, according to the Mercer County Sheriff.

Deputies responded to the 5000 block of Rauh Road in Washington Twp. after receiving a call from a third party reporting that a child may have been killed at the residence.

Coroner’s investigators said that the child, Jaxxen Baker, died from multiple blunt force trauma, the sheriff said.

As Deputies were arresting the suspect, Cory W. Eischen, 39, he held a knife to his neck and deputies deployed their Tasers, the sheriff said.

Deputies said Eischen reported that the child had fallen off a bike or possibly slipped in the shower, however investigators did not believe the injuries were matching up with his stories.

“We’re going to bring this guy to justice,” Sheriff Jeff Grey said.

Eischen had been babysitting two children, including Baker, Grey said. The child’s mother, Cassie Spitzer, had left for work at 5 a.m. Sunday and did not know about the child’s death until after deputies arrived.

“The mother is pretty distraught,” Grey said.

The suspect was taken into custody after being treated at the hospital.

No official charges have been approved in the case, but he is currently being held in the Mercer County Jail on a probation violation and $500,000 bond.

Grey said Eischen is getting checks every five minutes in the jail and is speaking with counselors.

INITIAL REPORT:

Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey said his office will release information Tuesday on the homicide of a child within the county.

In a release Monday afternoon, Grey said a press conference will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Mercer County Adult Detention Facility.

Grey declined to release additional information Monday.
