UPDATE @ 4:56 p.m. (Feb. 12):

Cruiser camera from the Dayton sergeant who discovered six of the seven suspects hiding in a shed following a robbery at AT&T in Huber Heights has been released.

The video shows officers responding to the shed.

INITIAL REPORT:

Six of the seven suspects apprehended after an armed robbery at a Huber Heights cellphone store picked the wrong place to hide while fleeing police.

The six were apprehended by Dayton police Sgt. Ryan Halburnt, who first heard a “Signal 99,” a call that officers need assistance.

“As I was heading that way the dispatcher said approximately seven people just robbed a bank and were possibly armed with assault rifles,” he said.

It turned out to be an armed robbery reported shortly after 2 p.m. at the AT&T store, 8245 Old Troy Pike.

Soon after, Halburnt heard the search was zeroing in on a creek parallel to Claybeck Drive, where he played as a kid.

On a hunch he made his way along the creek and into the backyard of a house where he noticed a latch swung open on a shed.

“I opened the door and saw five individuals standing in the shed,” Halburnt said. “At that point I drew my weapon and ordered them all to the ground.”

The five complied as he called for help, and additional crews arrived within 45 seconds.

It just so happened that all of Huber Heights’ administrative officers, detectives and street crews were in the vicinity as well as a large contingent from other departments taking part in special weapons and tactics training.

“They all showed up and we took them into custody without incident,” Halburnt said.
