Dayton man sent to prison in child porn case

A Dayton man was sent to prison for distributing child pornography in 2012, the U.S. Department of Justice announced today.

Demian Pina, 35, was sentenced to serve 17 and a half years in prison after a jury convicted him in June 2015 on five counts of child pornography distribution and two counts of possessing child pornography, according to the release. Additionally, Pina will be under court supervision for 20 years after his release and he will have to register as a sex offender, according to the release.

Authorities said evidence was presented to show Pina shared the illicit imagery through a peer-to-peer file sharing program. Much of the material “depicted graphic child sex abuse,” according to the release.

Pina has been in jail since his arrest in February 2014. Authorities said he had been under investigation since 2010 and that led to a raid at his home the following year when federal agents seized computers.

After the raid, Pina acquired more computers and continued the illicit activity, according to the release.

Benjamin C. Glassman, acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio, said in a prepared statement that the victims were children “who lack the ability, power and strength to protect themselves from harm.”

“They are often abused by people they trust the most: a parent, a family member, a trusted friend,” Glassman’s statement reads. “People who distribute child pornography ensure their abuse lives on by trading the images of the worst moments of their young lives.”
