UPDATE @ 8 p.m.:

A fatal crash in Huber Heights that shut down Interstate 70 for nearly six hours today was caused by a reckless driver who crashed while troopers were trying to pull him over.

The crash happened around 2:20 p.m. on the I-70 exit ramp to Ohio 201. A Chevrolet Malibu driven by an unidentified male was traveling faster than the 70 mph speed limit when the driver left the interstate at Ohio 201. The driver went through a red light at the Ohio 201 intersection, went off the right side of the road and struck a utility pole, which sent power lines across Interstate 70 and led the Malibu to catch fire. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Dayton Post.

Eastbound I-70 lanes was to reopen around 8 p.m., according to the Ohio Department of Transportation.

Prior to the crash, a state trooper on the shoulder of I-70 at the 35 mile post noticed two vehicles traveling more than 100 mph, said Lt. Mark Nichols of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Dayton Post. As the vehicle passed the trooper, he attempted to catch up with them. One vehicle slowed down and went right. The second vehicle accelerated to a speed of about 115 mph, exited on the right side to route 201, drove through a red light at the Ohio 201 intersection, into the grass, went airborne for a short distance and struck a utility pole, Nichols said.

There was no one else in the vehicle and no one on the ground was injured, he said.

“Very serious, and very tragic for a traffic violation,” Nichols said. “It was a red light when he came through, so obviously somebody was looking down and trying to protect some people, but ultimately a bad decision for a traffic violation led to this.”

The pole the vehicle struck is a major support utility pole that supports many power lines, which were brought down on the highway.
