Babysitter arrested for OVI with child in back seat

A woman regretted asking a friend to babysit her baby while she was at work, after he was arrested for allegedly driving her vehicle while intoxicated with the baby in the backseat.

Christopher D. Coates, 29, was arrested in the parking lot of the Crown Plaza Hotel around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the Dayton police report.

Police said the suspect was spotted driving a 2007 Hyundai Sante Fe going approximately 50-55 mph in a 35 mph zone on East Fifth Street.

The vehicle was stopped in the hotel parking lot, the apparent destination of the suspect and the mother’s workplace, according to the report.

The suspect’s blood-alcohol-content registered at .171, according to the report. Ohio’s legal driving limit is .08.

Police said the mother became upset after she came out of work and saw her vehicle stopped.

She told police she gave the suspect permission to use her vehicle to pick her up from work, but he was not permitted to do so while intoxicated, according to the report.

Coates was booked into the Montgomery County Jail on suspicion of felony child endangering, operating a vehicle while intoxicated and failure to comply. He is schedule dto appear in court Monday afternoon, online jail records show.
