Franklin woman killed in head-on crash after driver falls asleep at wheel

A 20-year old Franklin woman who died in a head-on crash Saturday was on her way home from celebrating her 1-year wedding anniversary a day early.

Courtney Trent and James Daley, 20, had dropped off their 6-month-old son off at a relative's house in West Carrollton and were on their way home from dinner when the collision occurred, according to Melanie Barker, 19, of Franklin.

Barker said she had been Trent's friend since eighth grade.

Barker, who said she cannot come to terms with her friend's death, remembered her as "an amazing person."

"She had a heart of gold and she was there for everyone," Barker said. "She was just so bubbly and wanted to have fun and make friends."

A Franklin woman is dead after a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into her car on Ohio 123 in Warren County Saturday night.

Courtney Trent, 20, of Franklin was pronounced dead at the scene when the Pontiac G6 she was a passenger in was hit head-on by the driver of a Toyota Highlander.

Troopers were called to the scene of the crash on Ohio 123 near Shotwell Drive around 9:01 p.m., according to a release from the Lebanon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

In a preliminary investigation, troopers said Cory Kappus, 18, of Franklin was driving south on Ohio 123 when he fell asleep, veered off the right side of the road. Kappus’ Toyota then went left of center and struck the Pontiac head-on.

Troopers said the driver of the Pontiac, James Daley, 20, of Franklin was taken to Atrium Hospital where he remains in an unknown condition.

Kappus also was taken to Atrium Hospital with unknown injuries and has since been released.

The crash remains under investigation, but speed and the absence of a seat belt are considered contributing factors in the crash, according to troopers.

Troopers are investigating a fatal two-car crash tonight in Franklin.

The crash was reported around 9:15 p.m. on Ohio 123 near Beal Road, the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Lebanon Post said.

There are injuries as well, but it is not clear how many people are hurt.

The names and ages of those involved in the crash has not been released.

This report will be updated as we learn more details.
