Police have called off a search for a man they believe burglarized two homes in the area of West Stonequarry Road on Monday.

In the morning, a resident in one of the residences apparently surprised the violator, whose vehicle became stuck when he tried to flee, Vandalia Lt. Dan Swafford said.

A second burglary was believed to have been committed in the area by the same man, Swafford said.

Police, believing the man was still in the area, and set up a search using K-9 units from Huber Heights, troopers with the Ohio Highway Patrol and Miami County sheriff’s deputies along with a OSP airplane. Units tracked a scent to near a creek, said Swafford.

Police then moved the focus of their search to the area of the Stillwater Seventh-Day Adventist church on South Dixie Drive, but were not able to find the man. Police believe he eluded them in a vehicle he stole.

At the scene of the burglary, Swafford said, police did find an acquaintance of the man. An interview with her has led police to believe they know the man’s identify, Swafford said.

“We can get a hold of him,” the lieutenant said.
