AAA insurance is offering tips for those caught in the path of a tornado, and what to do once a tornado touches down.

"Our hearts go out to all those who've suffered losses from the recent tornado," said Cindy Antrican of AAA Miami Valley. "Clearly, the first order of business is to protect yourself and your family. The second is to call your insurance company."

Caught in the Path of a Tornado

  • Leave your car, seek shelter in a sturdy building
  • Never try to outrun a tornado. Your vehicle offers no protection
  • Seek shelter indoors, preferably a basement, or closet and small interior rooms. Stay away from walls, windows. Do not seek shelter in a mobile home
  • If you are out in the open, find a ditch, ravine or low-lying area and lie flat.

Caught in the Path of a Tornado

  • Check for injuries. Do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in immediate danger
  • Drive only if necessary and avoid flooded roads and washed-out bridges. Be on the lookout for fallen objects and downed electrical wires.
  • Check your house for structural damage, loose power lines, gas leaks and other damage.
  • Stay out of any building if you smell natural gas.
  • When dark, use battery-powered flashlights instead of candles;
  • Avoid drinking or preparing food with tap water until you are sure it's not contaminated;
  • Check refrigerator for spoiled food. When in doubt, throw it out;
  • When cleaning, be cautious and wear protective clothing.
