Android app scans gas pumps, ATMs for security compromises

Consumer expert and Dayton's Consumer Warrior Clark Howard speaks about a new mobile application for scanner ATMs and gas station pumps for credit card skimming devices.

The free application for Android only is called SkimmerScanner and helps to determine if a pay-at-the-pump has been compromised. Howard said there’s no free app yet for iPhone users.

“This is a plague right now,” Howard said of compromised ATMs and gas pumps by criminals stealing sensitive information to go on shopping sprees.

He said security features are virtually “non-existent” at ATMs, and banks have said it will be another two years before technology is updated on gas pumps to make them more secure.
