This is the winning iconic Dayton sculpture you will see downtown

UpDayton held a contest for the design of an iconic structure created by local artists to symbolize the city of Dayton, its history and its future.

THE CONTEST

Kelly Sexton, the director of programs and education at K12 & Tejas Gallery, came up with the idea to have these artists submit their sculpture designs to UpDayton for a chance to have this sculpture built downtown.

Much like the Chicago bean or the New York Love sign, “We wanted something Instagram worthy that would attract residents and visitors alike. [So], we sent out a call to artists in August,” Sexton said. With about 18 submissions and a set of rules to follow a design was finally chosen.

THE WINNER

The winning structure was created by Bing Design and is made in such a way that if you are standing to look at it at an angle, you can see that it spells out "Dayton."

Sexton said one of the most intriguing things about this piece is the story behind it.

“On one end it is rusted steel, which [indicates] a throwback to our roots and the industrial history of our city. On the other [end], it is shiny steel [that portrays] Dayton’s rebirth and how we’re coming back as a city,” she said.

K12 & Tejas Gallery will be working with Bing Design and the city of Dayton to find a location for the sculpture. Work on the sculpture is expected to begin in the spring and should take about a year to complete.
