There is no question the majority of Mississippi State fans would like to see Dak Prescott start against LSU. Count me among them. I just think he gives us our best chance to win this game. But if Tyler Russell is announced as the starter, or if he takes the field at any point, I will not boo him or Dan Mullen for the decision, and I hope you won't either.
MSU vs. LSU might as well be David vs. Goliath. The difference is the MSU fanbase are not God's chosen people, so we get slaughtered in 20 of 21 games. 25 of 28. We have to go back 40 years to make this series look even a tad respectable (27-12 LSU since 1974). They just have our number.
I will do whatever it takes to beat LSU. Ole Miss may be 1A on my list of games I want to win this year, but LSU is 1B. The last time we beat them was nearly half my lifetime ago. So I don't want to do anything that might hurt our chances in any way.
I understand that if you boo when Russell comes onto the field you aren't booing Tyler, you are booing Mullen. I don't care. We don't need any negative vibes going into that game. If Mullen believes Tyler gives us the best chance to win than I will rally around that and pull for him all the way until the end of the game. Besides, I would love for nothing more than Russell to come out and lead this team to a win and through the rest of the season. If we lose, however, and Tyler starts then go ahead and boo Mullen all the way home.
It's ashame the position we find ourselves in. Tyler Russell was highly touted coming out of high school, he has performed well at State, and now he may have lost his job due to injury. The coaching staff has never put him in an offense that gave him the best chance to succeed, and that's not his fault. He's not perfect, but there aren't many college QBs who are. He's handled this situation with grace and should be commended for his excellent attitude. But this is just one of those things that sucks in life, one of those times when things don't go your way.
If for nothing else, cheer Tyler on because of who Tyler is. If he's the man to lead the maroon and white on Saturday, then so be it. You may not agree with it, but let's all pull in one direction, and that's towards taking down our Goliath.
