It seems we'll be seeing a lot more of Dereck Whittenburg in the coming years--according to Andy Katz, Mark Gottfried is close to bringing Whitt back to the NC State coaching staff. A deal isn't done, but it sounds like a matter of time.

Whittenburg has extensive coaching experience, both as an assistant and a head coach. Before making the transition to ESPN, he was the head coach at Fordham for 6+ years, though his rebuilding effort there didn't work out. He also spent four years at Wagner, where he took the school from a losing record in year one to the NCAAs in year four.
He served two stints as an assistant for Jim Valvano back in the day, and he's spent time at Georgia Tech and West Virginia, among other places. I can't speak to his recruiting abilities, but it definitely doesn't hurt to add a couple decades of coaching experience, especially considering Bobby Lutz is probably gone sooner rather than later.
Let's just hope Whitt proves a better add than those other alums we hired who won national titles.
