The 49ers took care of business on Saturday as they cut down their roster from 75 players to 53 players. Today, the team has to deal with the important task of wading through waivers and assembling their practice squad from players that clear waivers. While that is all well and good, one truly monumental task remains:
Who wears No. 24: Nnamdi Asomugha or Anthony Dixon? More importantly, how do they make this decision?
Yes indeed, my friends, this is a heady task facing the 49ers roster. The season has not even begun, and we already face a moment that could tear this roster apart from within!
As the 49ers roster page currently stands, Boobie Dixon is listed with No. 24, and Nnamdi Asomugha is listed with no jersey. That has been the case all preseason, but clearly Jim Harbaugh and Trent Baalke have chosen sides in this jersey battle.
Given that we believe our opinions to be as strong as that of the front office, and our opinions are correct on all matters related to roster dealings, it is clearly up to us to determine the fate of the No. 24 jersey.
The question is how? The easy way out would be one player compensating the other player for the rights to the jersey. That's easy, and arguably the most capitalist way to do things, but that is certainly not the most entertaining way to determine who wears No. 24.
We could look at what each brings to the table. Nnamdi Asomugha has the significant pedigree as an All-Pro cornerback. He is a classy guy who is among the most well known philanthropists in the NFL.
Anthony Dixon is a top-notch special teamer. He is arguably the 49ers biggest cheerleader after games, frequently seen running around with a team flag. And of course, he has 24 in his twitter handle.
It's a tough battle, which means some form of competition is necessary to make this determination. Maybe a 40-yard dash? A game of Madden? Perhaps the Festivus feats of strength? I am all ears for what competition is necessary.
