No. 2 receiving took a step back yesterday. Kyle Williams tweaked his hamstring, but said his surgically-repaired knee felt fine. He implied he would be fine, simply that he needed to stay out of practice. A.J. Jenkins on the other hand, played the entire day, but most wished he hadn't. He dropped many passes and had a horrible showing according to all the writers. Quinton Patton is wearing a cast on one of his fingers, but it's only expected to hinder him catching the ball temporarily.
On the positive side, Vernon Davis has had a monster training camp. Many of us have suspected that he was the best bet to replace the injured Michael Crabtree's production. Last year, his lack of chemistry with Colin Kaepernick was painfully apparent, though the two meshed well during the playoff run. Now he's on fire. Ian Williams was also noted as having a dominating day in the trenches, though Lawrence Okoye looked like he'd never played football before.
Cam Inman discusses the trials and tribulations of the receivers. So far, nobody seems terribly eager to step up and grab the starting job. Whoever gets the nod for the No. 2 and No. 3 WR will have every chance to see their career take off. Otherwise we're biding our time until Mario Manningham and Crabtree return. | Receiver roulette: Kyle Williams tweaks hamstring, Quinton Patton dons cast, A.J. Jenkins struggles (Inman)
I've been away from the site for a few days (it was my birthday on Saturday) and haven't had a chance to comment on the Tarell Brown contract situation. Maybe you're all sick of hearing about it, but I'm not sick of writing about it. I'm really convinced that the team has no intention of bringing Brown back. It's strictly a hunch. But they're not going to pay him what the CB market will pay him in free agency next year. If they have any intention of re-signing him, they'll need him to compromise. They must think it will be impossible to bring him back and it's worth it to save the $2 million. I don't think they should just give him the bonus back (he and his camp are ultimately responsible), but with only Carlos Rogers and Chris Culliver under contract beyond this season, they'll need some people. They will surely be looking to add some high draft pick(s), but.... | Agents: Plenty of blame all around in Tarell Brown contract snafu (Maiocco)
And the story that makes my heart go pitter patter. I'd love to see Vernon have a 1,000 yard, 10 TD season. We all would. Him becoming a co-primary threat with Anquan Boldin would take a lot of pressure off of the young receivers vying for the No. 2 spot. It would also take some pressure off of the injured receivers looking to get back. It would take pressure off of young Colin Kaepernick. It would just be good. | Training camp D3: Vernon Davis goes deep ... again and again (Inman)
